Cleanup and catch-up

Books behind, or numbers
you don't trust.

We start with a diagnostic of the file as it stands, agree the scope of catch-up work against what we find, then move you onto a monthly process that keeps it current.

Who this is for

Incorporated Canadian businesses whose books stopped being reliable.

Delayed books are usually a process problem rather than an effort problem. The catch-up work is the visible part; the recurring cycle afterwards is what stops it recurring.

  • You run an incorporated business in Canada.
  • The books are months behind, or balances no longer agree to statements.
  • Bank, credit card or loan accounts have not been reconciled in some time.
  • Reporting is not usable for decisions, or for your year-end accountant.

We work with incorporated small and mid-sized businesses. This is not personal or consumer tax work.

How we help

Diagnose first, then quote the work.

Nobody can price a cleanup accurately without opening the file. So we open the file first.

01/

Diagnostic

A review of the file that reports what is actually wrong: unreconciled accounts, misposted or duplicated transactions, stale balances and missing periods.

02/

Scope and sequence

Catch-up work scoped against what the diagnostic found, worked oldest period first so each period closes on the one before it.

03/

Catch-up processing

Transactions entered and categorised, and supporting documents matched to them.

04/

Reconciliations

Bank, credit card, loan, payroll and HST/GST accounts reconciled back to source statements.

05/

Reporting reset and recurring process

A clean set of statements, then a monthly close cycle with a fixed calendar so the file stays current.

Not sure which of these you need?

That is what the consultation is for. Thirty minutes, no obligation.

Next steps

Four steps to a file you can rely on.

How long the middle two take depends entirely on what the diagnostic finds.

STEP 01

Consultation

Thirty minutes. How far behind, which systems, and what the books need to support.

STEP 02

Diagnostic

We review the file and report the condition it is in, with the catch-up scope and sequence.

STEP 03

Catch-up and reconciliation

Processing and reconciliation, oldest period first, until the file is current.

STEP 04

Monthly close

A recurring close cycle so the backlog does not rebuild.

What you get back

A file that answers questions.

The point of the cleanup is not tidiness. It is being able to make a decision, or answer a lender or your accountant, without rebuilding the numbers first.

01

Statements you can act on

Reporting that reflects the business, rather than a partially posted file that has to be interpreted.

02

A shorter year-end

Your year-end accountant works from reconciled accounts instead of reconstructing them, which is where year-end cost tends to sit.

03

A process, not a rescue

The recurring monthly close is the part that keeps the file current. The cleanup alone does not.

Common questions

Before you book.

How far back can you go?

It depends on the records still available — bank and credit card statements, invoices, payroll records. The diagnostic establishes how far back a reliable reconstruction is possible.

What if the cleanup surfaces something that affects a past filing?

We raise it with you as soon as we see it and set out the options, including where you may want to involve your year-end accountant. Nothing gets filed or amended without your decision.

Can you do the cleanup and then leave it with our team?

Yes. Some clients want the file brought current and handed back with written procedures. Others move onto our monthly cycle. Both are normal.

Start with a diagnostic.

Thirty minutes on how far behind the file is and what a realistic catch-up would involve.
